Clothing alterations, custom sewing
My mother first taught me how to sew when I was five, and I began to make small dresses for my dolls shortly after. Growing up in the Soviet Union during the ’80s, there was very little fashion to be seen.
The sewing industry was under strict control so all clothing was manufactured to look almost identical, produced simply and only in varying shades of gray. As the decade came to an end, Mikhail Gorbachev, a first Russian President, opened up the country and allowed more exploration of culture.
During this time I found a German sewing magazine named Burda Moden and fell in love. There were so many beautiful clothes! I began to buy every copy I could find to transfer as many of the patterns as possible.
I have now been sewing for myself for over 30 years . I haven’t taken any professional courses; instead, I’ve been my own teacher and have taught myself almost everything I know
